Annual Sufism Symposium |
|
THEME:
Varies Year to Year
DATE: Spring Time
LOCATION: Northern California or Washington State
REPORT: It is with gratitude that scholars, Sufi masters and
saleks alike respond to Shah Nazar Seyed Dr. Ali Kianfar and
Seyedeh Dr. Nahid Angha's invitation to come together for
these yearly meetings for the purpose of sharing ideas, celebrating
the secret of our hearts, and joining in worship of Allah.
The Symposium has become a major event for the greater community,
as well as a time for Sufis from many different orders around
the world to come together. The result was an audience which
included new people experiencing the beauty and power of Sufism
for the first time joining faithful friends from many previous
symposia gathering from across the U.S. and all over the world
in a spirit of unity. For more information, visit www.sufismsymposium.org.

| Women
in Black present Non-Traditional
Commemoration of Tisha B'av |
|
DATE:
Sunday, July 21, 2002 @ 5:30pm
LOCATION: Emeryville Marina, California
SUMMARY: Bay Area Women in Black is sponsoring a community
observance of Tisha B'Av, traditionally a day of lamentation
and mourning. We gather to lament because the ground in Israel
and Palestine is damp with blood. Each day the earth opens
to receive the bodies of those who are killed in a struggle
that has turned to rage and revenge on all sides. It seems,
these days, that there is little promise, little possibility,
only historic bitterness, parallel narratives, and language
that reduces the other to ashes. We gather to mourn the horrific
losses and our own loss of hope and optimism about an end
to the Occupation and a peaceful future for both Israelis
and Palestinians. We gather to honor those Israelis and Palestinians
who have worked tirelessly for a negotiated agreement and
to honor our own seemingly endless toil to keep the vision
of peace alive. We gather to express our grief, to lament
for the past and present and to strengthen our resolve to
bring about a different future. This community observance
will be dedicated to the memory of June Jordan. Please join
members of Sufi Youth International and the Sufi Women Organization,
who will be attending. Everyone is welcome. Please wear black.
Please contact
us if you are interested in participating.

International Peace Day |

DATE:
Friday, March 15, 2002
LOCATION: International
SUMMARY: On March 15, International Peace Day, SYI would like
to encourage youth to visit temples, kovils, churches mosques,
and synagogues in their community at 6:30pm (in their own
time zone) to embrace the spirit of peace with simultaneous
prayer services. To help foster peace in a unified voice,
we ask that participants wear white and walk into a place
of worship (temple, kovil, church mosque, or synagogue) and
pray for peace. We would also encourage members to light an
oil lamp or candle, ring the bells, or join in song to pray
for peace throughout the world. To view Sufi Youth's list

United Religions Initiative: North American Regional Summit |
THEME:
Circles in Motion - Gifts to Share
DATE: Thursday, May 31, 2001 - Monday, June 4, 2001
LOCATION: Salt Lake City, Utah
REPORT: The purpose of the Summit was (1) to provide a hospitable
interfaith environment for participants to get acquainted; (2)
to forge a shared vision and plant seeds for a URI North America
strategic plan; and (3) to explore specific opportunities to
be of service as URI-North America. There was a large focus
on youth involvement in the URI throughout the Summit. There
were three scheduled workshops which focused on youth interfaith
work. This was a time when youth came together to share their
stories, insights, accomplishments and goals. At the final youth
gathering, the youth decided that they wanted to start their
own youth URI Cooperation Circle which they announced at the
public forum. Several different URI representatives joined the
youth gatherings to offer support and encouragement. The URI
decided to ask the youth to plan the public forum at the Summit
presented to the public of Salt Lake City. The youth presented
prayer, dance, singing, poetry, storytelling, drama and forms
of martial arts. Emily Hedges, representing Sufi Youth International,
participated in poetry and singing. The Summit strongly encouraged
engagement among the youth. Everyone was interested in the youth
and wanted to know what we were doing. Many people were surprised
by what youth are devoted to these days and wanted to hear about
our work. For more information, visit www.uri.org. |
